6.1.1. Exam Structure, Question Types, and Scoring
A clear understanding of the exam's mechanics, cognitive demands, and scoring is the foundation for building an efficient study plan and a tactical test-taking strategy.
The AWS Certified Advanced Networking - Specialty (ANS-C01) exam validates advanced technical skills in designing, implementing, and troubleshooting complex network solutions on AWS.
- Exam Format:
- Primarily multiple-choice and multiple-response questions.
- 65 questions in total.
- 170 minutes (2 hours 50 minutes) to complete the exam.
- Scaled score from 100-1,000, with a passing score of 750.
- No penalty for incorrect answers.
- Question Types:
- Scenario-based: Most questions present a realistic networking problem or design challenge, followed by options for the best solution. These are often complex and require analysis of requirements, constraints, and trade-offs across multiple AWS networking services.
- Multi-Select: Questions may require selecting two or more correct options. These are often explicitly stated (e.g., "Choose TWO correct answers").
- Cognitive Level Tested: Focuses on Design, Implement, Troubleshoot, and Evaluate. You must not only recall services but also understand how they integrate, why one is better than another in a given context, and the trade-offs involved in network design and operations.
- Domain Weighting: Distributed across official exam domains (e.g., Network Design, Network Implementation, Network Management & Operations, Network Security, Network Troubleshooting).
⚠️ Common Pitfall: Preparing by only memorizing service features. The exam tests your ability to apply knowledge to solve complex problems, not just recite facts.
Key Trade-Offs:
- Speed vs. Accuracy: With ~2.6 minutes per question, you must balance reading carefully with maintaining a steady pace.
